Running destinations also make great vacations

Bliesure travel is well known in business circles and it is the combining of travel for business and leisure. It’s a great idea and has become very popular as is travel for sporting activities and vacations within the same trip.

One wouldn’t necessarily define running as a sport as it is simply a way for millions of people to get fit, but for many, it is a serious business and a sport that they love. Running marathons and half marathons become a way of life for these people and this not only gives them motivation and a sense of great accomplishment but because the best running events are spread all over the world, also a great chance to travel. For many runners, their running destinations also make great vacations!

South Africa’s best

For now, we’re focussing just on South African events because for obvious reasons international travel is limited, but some of the best marathons in the world are right on our doorstep and when runners go to participate in these, they can extend their stays with some of the great vacation packages we can suggest.

The Comrade’s Marathon – Kwa Zulu Natal

Alternating year by year to start in one destination or the other, the internationally renowned Comrades marathon is run annually in June between the holiday city of Durban and beautiful Pietermaritzburg. Training for this race is intense and serious contenders are in training right now and have been since January.

It fields a massive number of runners and is attended by hundreds of thousands at the start and finish and all along the 90-kilometer route! To win a Comrades medal is a great achievement.

Whilst traveling home, take in 4 nights at the luxurious Resort Sani pass (link to resort Sani pass) in the spectacular Drakensburg mountains to really recharge your batteries.

The Two Oceans Marathon – Cape Town

Set in the Mother city this spectacularly beautiful running event gives runners the option of a half (21K) and full (56K) marathon stretching from Newlands in the city, to the Indian ocean at Fishhook and around the peninsular to Hout bay, over Chapman’s peak and finally to the finish at UCT.

It is taxing and as it is run over Easter in April it is said to be a great yardstick for fitness for the Comrades. So much can be seen in Cape Town if you extend your vacation. From pristine beaches to the serene Winelands and so much more. If you are training there over Mother’s Day next month, take in this great deal or spoil yourself with a perfect Winelands getaway at Le Franschhoek Hotel and Spa. This is the gourmet capital of SA!

Om die Dam and the Soweto Marathons – Gauteng

Both these events also offer both full and half marathons and take place in, or very close to the city of gold, Johannesburg. Om Die Dam is run in March around the very popular Hartbeespoort Dam and includes a spectacular dash across the dam wall and a climb up the tough Saartjiesnek. If you are still in the area, take in a luxurious safari experience at one of the Pilanesberg Game Reserve’s finest lodges, which is offering a spectacular, almost half-price deal right now.

The Soweto Marathon is a highly festive event that takes place within this famous township area and participants are heartily spurned on by the locals. Very close to Johannesburg, you can take the family for a great weekend getaway to the beautiful Mabula Game lodge. A great way to end your stay in Josie.

…and many more …

As always, we have just touched the tip of the iceberg or ‘just got warmed up’ as you runners would say. There are many more running destinations that also make great vacations, so watch this space for more in SA, and all over the world.

We have also just mentioned a few of the incredible packages being offered by South Africa’s premier business and leisure travel specialists – Rennies Travel Experience.
