More experience destinations right in your backyard!
In this article we continue with advice on experience destinations – those great vacation getaways you can enjoy whilst you experience your favourite sport or leisure activity. As promised in our last article, we look at hiking in the berg, diving in Kwa Zulu Natal and white-water rafting in magnificent Mpumalanga. With COVID-19 still pinning us down, you may not want to venture too far, so there can be no better time to grab your scuba gear, hiking boots, or canoe and simply get away to some great experience destinations right in your backyard!
Diving in KZN
KwaZulu Natal boasts the best diving spots in South Africa including one that is rated as one of the best in the world. All along the KZN coastline from south to north, there are great diving spots and dozens of chilled vacation destinations too.
Rocktail Bay – Great diving is to be had at Rocktail Bay on remote, unspoilt reefs where you don’t find too many divers. This is a wonderful coral landscape, teeming with fish and part of the famous iSimangaliso Wetland Park, where diving is great all year round.
Kosi Bay – Kosi Bay, in the same sort of area but further north on the Mozambique border, is great for newer divers as there are numerous fairly shallow sights. Here you can also dive all year round and swim with Whale Sharks in the summer season from the end of October through to March!
Sodwana Bay – This is the Grandaddy of them all and is the dive destination rated as one of the best in the world. Right in the heart of iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Sodwana Bay includes 2 Mile, 5 Mile, 7 Mile and 9 Mile Reefs – all ideal dives. Even night dives are offered at certain times. There are prolific marine species and coral gardens so make an underwater camera has to be part of your gear!
When visiting any of these dive sights book a nearby vacation experience anywhere on the KZN coastline or in Durban itself.
Hiking in the Berg
Both casual and very serious hikers flock to the magnificent Drakensberg Mountain range for some of the best and most challenging hiking in the World. These are 2 of the most popular, one for the family and one for the pros…
Rainbow Gorge – A casual, not too taxing, hike that takes about five hours and can be enjoyed by the whole family is the Rainbow Gorge trail. It’s a six-kilometre return walk from Cathedral Peak Hotel and it follows the Ndumeni River upstream, winding through beautiful forest areas past rock pools, rapids and waterfalls and into the Gorge.
The Bell Traverse – This is an extreme hike taking 3 days and not for the faint-hearted. This tough but beautiful trail winds like a snake from Bugger Gully, between The Bell, Twins and Mitre, some of the better-known peaks of the Cathedral Valley, to the top of Mlambonja Ravine, just below the Berg escarpment. As one expert observed, “Expect dramatic, big-mountain scenery and about five scrambling sections, where one has to tip-toe across rock faces a few metres wide over large drops of nothing below!’’
While in the Berg enjoy a relaxing, calming stay at one of its premier resorts.
White water rafting in Mpumalanga
The best place for this activity and close to KZN is Mpumalanga where the Sabi river runs and the Blyde river runs into the magnificent Blyde river canyon. Again, there is something for both amateurs and adrenaline junkies.
White Water paddling on the Sabie River is more of a scenic adventure with Grade 2 to 3 rapids mildly testing your skills. Alternatively, for a heart-stopping adrenaline junkie adventure, go White River Rafting on the Blyde River. Here, in the Blyde River Canyon, you can test your skills with fast and furious Grade 3 to 5 white water rapids.
This is a beautiful part of the world to have a chilled vacation too with historic places like Pilgrims rest, magnificent scenic spots like God’s window, and an abundance of game viewing experiences. This is one of our current favourite packages available while you’re there
