As we start to look forward to our summer here in South Africa the snow begins to form in far-away lands, and this year-end both the northern and southern hemispheres have much to offer those bitten by the travel bug! Hopefully, if you have been vaccinated there will be many places to travel to and of course, right here in South Africa are some of the finest vacation destinations in the world.
As always, we like to recommend destinations where those who indulge in certain sports, interests or hobbies can maximise their pleasure whilst also enjoying a great vacation. We call these “Experience Destinations” so, internationally, on our borders, or in our own great country, here are a few extreme sports destinations that are great for vacations too! …
Snow Skiing in Switzerland
As you feel like you are almost flying down some of the best and most famous ski slopes in the world you will be forgiven for being more than a little scared but this is what adrenaline junkies live for! Snow skiing is not for the faint-hearted and of course only well trained, experienced skiers should attempt the best of the slopes.
But, there are plenty of opportunities for amateurs to learn though and much for the whole family to enjoy on a Swiss winter holiday. Book now for this year-end and you will experience a white Christmas that is magical and unforgettable. For honeymooners, Families or extreme sports fans, Switzerland is a great place to be!
Microlight flights over Vic Falls
This too is not for the faint-hearted! It is sometimes called, “The Flight of Angels” and microlight flights over the magnificent Victoria Falls (a world wonder in itself) offer a unique and exhilarating extreme sports experience that will take your breath away! The views of the Falls and the spectacular gorge below the thunderous waters are magnificent, and as you fly through the clouds of spray you may well feel you have experienced a little slice of heaven.
Whilst there, the vacation experience at the Victoria Falls is also fabulous for the whole family and includes walks through the rain forest, magnificent sunset cruises and abundant game viewing along the banks of the Zambezi.
Bungy jumping in Plettenberg Bay
This is extreme sport at its best and can be enjoyed when vacationing at one of South Africa’s premier coastal resorts, Plettenberg Bay. Nearby you can experience the world’s highest, natural Bungy jump, a number one bucket list item for extreme sports enthusiasts from all over the globe. It all happens at the Bloukrans Bridge Bungy – a jump of a heart-stopping 216 metres above sea level!
Bloukrans is Africa’s highest commercial Bungy-bridge and many world records are associated with it. Plettenberg Bay itself is on South Africa’s world-renown “Garden route” and is a coastal resort offering fabulous beaches, superb restaurants and nightlife, and every form of entertainment for the whole family.
Shark cage diving in the Cape
There is little more daunting or more likely to raise the adrenaline levels of even the bravest extreme sports enthusiast than being “up close and personal” with sharks! Gansbaai is the favourite spot for this and in particular, for engaging with Great Whites. Obviously, one’s safety is assured but it doesn’t feel like that cage is much protection when one of these magnificent, but scary, marine creatures is face-to-face with you!
The Western Cape is also a world-renowned vacation area with everything to offer from majestic Table Mountain, which surveys “The Mother city” of Cape Town, many pristine beaches, and of course, the famed Cape Winelands.
